About
Welcome to San Mezcal, a gem nestled in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Located at Recreo 88, Zona Centro, this vibrant establishment captures the essence of traditional Mexican culture while infusing contemporary flair into its offerings. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for both locals and travelers alike.
What sets San Mezcal apart? It's not just the impressive selection of mezcal—though that’s certainly a highlight! Patrons rave about the 'encyclopedic' variety of this distinctive spirit, which takes center stage in their inventive cocktail menu. According to Van Lewis, who visited five times in one month, the mezcal-based creations are 'truly delicious and inventive.' This speaks volumes about the dedication the team puts into their drinks.
But let’s not overlook the food. The menu is a delightful marriage of traditional Mexican and French-inflected preparations. Customers can indulge in dishes that celebrate local ingredients, with specific mention of the costillo, which is described as 'perfectly cooked and full of concentrated traditional Mexican flavors.' The care put into crafting each dish resonates with everyone who experiences it, as noted by Graham Short, who was pleasantly surprised by the richness of flavors found in their shepherd's pie.

“ We popped into a few Mezcal bars and this one was hands-down the best. Incredible selection, good food and a nice staff. ”
“ Found this gem yesterday. Came for mezcal (amazing selection) but tried their parm fries and spinach salad. Both equally great tasting. ”
“ Had reviewed this two years ago ... but had never tried their food. The cocktails were amazing and the food delicious. It’s a small but intimate space with delightful staff. When the shepherds pie arrived I thought it was going to be to small - but the lamb was rich and dense in flavor. I left happy and full. The stout at 9% was great. The cocktails with Mezcal and activated carbon were fabulous. ”
“ I ate here 5 times in March 2025. Dropped in because of the name, ended up having some truly delicious and inventive mezcal-based cocktails. Lunch food is light and good. Supper food is truly excellent: the flavors and ingredients are mostly traditionally of the Bajio, but the preparations are French-inflected. They have a way with corn that would make any Mexican traditionalist proud. I highly recommend the costillo, which is perfectly cooked and full of concentrated traditional Mexican flavors. Their mezcal selection is dangerously encyclopedic. Service is friendly, knowledgeable, and a bit loosie-goosey. The small dining room is part of the bar, a simple and pleasant room about a 5-minute walk from the Parroquia. Easily my happiest food experience in SMA. ”
“ Stopped in for a drink and a small bite. I had a mule that was pretty spectacular. They gave us an amazing salad as soon as we sat down and we ordered a chicken sandwich of sorts. That description makes it sound boring but it was phenomenal. Atmosphere was awesome and server/bartender attentive. A bit pricey compared to the rest of our trip but definitely delicious. We plan to be back! ”
“ Tried amazing new varieties of agaves, the favourite was Don Mateo de la sierra - alto from the mezcals. Food was great, large portions and the ceviche was dreamy - don’t forget to ask for the habanero sauce! ”
“ San Mezcal is hands down one of the most amazing bars I’ve been to in Mexico. Their selection of Mezcal is incredible and the variety is unparalleled. I walked in as someone who though “hated Mezcal” and left a lover and connoisseur of this spirit. The owner Julio was super nice and offered so much knowledge! He taught us how to taste and enjoy Mezcal. The bar also offers traditional drinks and amazing food. I am a tough food and cocktail critic especially being born and raised in Mexico I know my tequila and Mezcal. This place is AMAZING. Not to mention the food! I am a big foodie that lives in Philly and goes out to eat every other day and this spot has made me want to move down here! Everyone visiting San Miguel should have the experience of San Mezcal. You will not be disappointed! ”
“ Best mezcal bar in town, fantastic food offerings, and directly managed by Julio, cozy ambience with reasonable prices, a unique and authentic experience in SMA ”
